VELscope Oral Cancer Exam

The VELscope system is an oral cancer screening device that uses a safe blue light to examine the soft tissues lining the oral cavity. The light causes tissue fluorescence through the surface to the basement membrane and beneath. Normal and abnormal tissues have different fluorescence and the VELscope special filtering allows the clinician to immediately see the difference. This technology helps the clinician identify potentially dangerous growths that could have been missed with the naked eye.

Oral cancer is a very serious and deadly disease. One person in North America dies every hour of every day from oral cancer. Early detection with newer technology such as the VELscope can improve the 5 year survival rate from 20% - 30% up to 80% - 90%. Many health experts recommend all adults receive an oral cancer exam on at least an annual basis.
