This type of treatment for gum disease does not involve surgery or stitches. It is most often indicated for treatment of gum disease caught early and it may be all you need if caught early enough. By removing the plaque and calculus (tartar) deposits above and below the gums the harmful bacteria is eliminated and healing begins. You may also need to have worn out, defective fillings or poor fitting crowns removed prior to having periodontal therapy because these just accumulate bacteria and plaque and will not allow proper healing.
This is a means of non-surgical treatment that removes the bacterial deposits from the teeth and root surfaces below the gumline. This allows the supporting gum tissue to better adhere to the tooth surfaces and protect the supporting bone. Sometimes this is done with the administration of local anesthetic for your comfort.

Tooth Scaling

Root Planing
Gum disease is a bacterial infection that can lead to tooth loss unless it is controlled by eliminating or greatly reducing the harmful bacteria. Sometimes as a supplement to scaling and root planing, antibiotics may be administered as a pill, a mouthwash or applied directly to the gum tissues in order to help control the ill effects of the bacteria and promote healing.
Bad bite relationships may increase the bone destruction associated with gum disease because of the excessive forces placed on the involved teeth. By adjusting the bite to eliminate the trauma to the teeth they will fit together better and function better. At times it is necessary to fabricate custom fitted bite guards to protect the teeth from grinding while asleep and to relax jaw muscles.
